Injured by falling rock during high-altitude climbing
Former German biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, an Olympic gold medallist and world champion, suffered a serious accident during a mountaineering expedition in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountains. According to her manager, Dahlmeyer was injured when a rock fell on her while climbing Laila Peak on July 28. Laila Peak is a very dangerous mountain with a height of more than 6,000 metres.
The accident occurred at an altitude of about 5,700 metres, where she and her rope-partner were climbing alpine style. After the incident, her partner immediately called for emergency assistance. Rescue operations were launched, but due to the inaccessibility of the area, a helicopter could reach the spot only the next morning.
No signs of life yet
The initial helicopter flight found no obvious signs of life, although reports confirmed she was “at least seriously injured.” International rescue teams are now coordinating efforts at the scene with the help of local and global mountaineers.
