Shubman Gill became the highest-scoring visiting Asian captain in England on July 3, 2025, when he scored a career-high 269 runs at Edgbaston, giving India a decisive lead over England. He attributes his historic performance to coach Gautam Gambhir.
Both Shubman Gill’s life and Indian cricket history will be permanently marked by July 3, 2025. At Edgbaston that day, the young Indian captain gave a masterclass, breaking records and redefining his leadership path with a career-best 269 runs. Gill became the highest-scoring visiting Asian captain in a Test match played in England after his incredible innings put his team in a dominant position after India reduced England to 77/3. The 25-year-old attributes this historic performance to head coach Gautam Gambhir.
A Record-Breaking Innings by Shubhman Gill
Gill’s knock at Edgbaston was his second consecutive century as captain, according to the Hindustan Times, after he had already reached a century in the first Test. He went far beyond his previous first-class best of 268 for Punjab in the 2018–19 season this time. He became the first Asian captain to score 200 or more in a Test match in England with his double century.
Turning Point: Tea-Time Talk With Coach Gautam Gambhir
In an interview with former cricket player Deep Dasgupta, Gill disclosed that he had a difficult start and only scored 35–40 runs by tea on Day 1. I told GG bhai that I was having trouble setting boundaries. He urged me to maintain my composure and keep things straightforward. My rhythm was unlocked by that conversation,” Gill said.
A Change in Approach
After giving his strategy some thought, Gill acknowledged that he was now more interested in enjoying his batting than in chasing large scores. “I tried to focus more on the process and less on results during the IPL and prior to this series. “Big scores come easily when you start having fun at the crease,” he said.
A New Era for Indian Cricket
There is more to Gill’s Edgbaston epic than just scoreboard figures. It demonstrates fortitude, mental acuity, and the support of a coach who has faith in him. India’s youthful captain has already demonstrated that he is prepared to leave his mark in cricket’s most difficult venues as they aim to win a series.

Shubman Gill Career Overview
Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab, on September 8, 1999, making him 25 years old. He grew up idolizing Yuvraj Singh, who would later serve as his mentor, like many other Punjabi boys do. While serving as the Indian team’s vice-captain and scoring 372 runs at an average of more than 120 in six games during the 2018 U-19 World Cup, Gill first attracted international notice.
The Kolkata Knight Riders paid Rs. 1.8 crore to acquire him that same year. In addition to playing well for Punjab in domestic cricket across all formats at the time, he was also the youngest captain to lead a team to the Deodhar Trophy final, having done so at the age of 20. After playing in the ODI match against New Zealand in Hamilton in January 2019, Gill made his debut for the national team. However, he was cut from the squad for two years.
Shubman returned to the Indian cricket team in Test and One-Day International matches against Australia towards the end of 2020. He was the team’s go-to young top-order batsman.
Meanwhile, with consecutive seasons of 400 runs in 2020 and 2021, Gill had established himself as KKR’s reliable IPL scorer. However, the young player developed into one of the nation’s top-order hitters after being selected by the Gujarat Titans in the 2022 draft.
As Shikhar Dhawan grew older, Gill took his place as a regular in ODIs and Test matches. In addition to making his T20I debut in 2023, he amassed the second-highest IPL run total of any player in a single season with an incredible 890 runs. Gill was now referred to as the “Prince” because he was considered the next great Indian batter and the heir to “King” Virat Kohli
Shubman is the type of player who is entertaining to watch batting all day due to his elegant stroke play and stylish shots. One of the greatest ODI cricket players in the world, Shubman Gill scored the most runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup while playing for India.
Gill was selected as GT’s IPL captain in 2024. He has now guided the team to the playoffs in just his second season. Shubman also took over as captain of the Test team in 2025, ushering in a new era for the Indian cricket team.
