Arsenal start pre-season tour in control
Arsenal started their 2025 pre-season with a much-improved first half against AC Milan in Singapore. Despite dominating the ball and creating a number of chances, the Gunners failed to break the deadlock before the halftime whistle.
Saka leads by example
With Martin Odegaard on the bench, Bukayo Saka was handed the captaincy and looked desperate to make his mark. He was very active on the right flank, constantly threatening the Milan defence and even put the ball in the net in the 18th minute – but the goal was ruled out for a dubious foul.
Midfield balance and Nwaneri shine
Christian Norgaard made his Arsenal debut and easily found a place alongside Declan Rice. The pair provided a solid base in midfield, while 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri made a good start in a more advanced role. Nwaneri came close to scoring with a superb shot that was saved by Milan goalkeeper Pietro Terracciano.
Missed chances for Arsenal
The Gunners could have easily gone into the break with a lead but Ricardo Calafiori, playing at left centre-back, had a shot cleared off the line, while Ben White had a powerful volley from close range. Kai Havertz also looked active up front, sharing well with Gabriel Martinelli and Saka.
Milan threat on the counter
Despite being under pressure for much of the half, AC Milan had some good moments. Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic launched a number of counter-attacks, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek tried to get forward from midfield. Leao had a late chance in the box, but Calafiori’s timely clearance denied him the chance.
New faces on the bench- Arsenal vs AC Milan
Arsenal fans are still eagerly awaiting new signings Martin Zubimendi and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who have been named among the substitutes. With more changes expected after the break, they stand a chance of making their first appearance in an Arsenal jersey. Academy players Max Dowman and Marley Salmon, who are both just 15, are also on the bench to get more experience of senior football.
What’s next?
The match will resume soon, and Arsenal will hope their dominance finally translates into a goal. Next, the Gunners face Newcastle on July 27 and Tottenham on July 31, where they will further strengthen their preparations for the 2025-26 season.
At halftime, Arsenal were scoring 0 and AC Milan 0 – but all signs pointed to the Gunners knocking on the door.
