IND vs ENG 3rd Test Match Day 5: England edge India by 22 runs in Lord’s thriller, take 2-1 series lead

There’s always a reason for heartbreak, and then there’s what happened to India at Lord’s. Chasing a target of 193 in the fourth innings, the visitors fell short by just 22 runs and were bowled out for 170 on what turned out to be a topsy-turvy day five. The home side now lead the five-match Test series 2-1.

Ravindra Jadeja had almost won the match. He stuck to his feet to score a crucial half-century as wickets tumbled. He had India within touching distance of victory, but last man Mohammed Siraj failed to get his defence right, sealing the match in England’s favour

The morning session tilted the game completely in England’s favour. Ben Stokes bowled relentlessly from one end and bowled a match-winning spell that broke the back of India’s batting. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, all three were dismissed early. Archer was also bowling aggressively, causing problems for India’s lower order.

India started the day with some hope, but were in trouble from the fourth day itself, when England were bowled out for 192 despite being 154/4 at one point. Washington Sundar turned the match around with 4 for 22—the best performance by an Indian spinner in England in the last two decades. This spell kept the contest alive.

After the match, the scene was quite emotional. Ben Stokes, who was the biggest reason for England’s victory, went to Siraj and consoled him. This is what makes Test cricket special. Tension, drama, and respect, everything was present in the five days of fierce struggle, due to which this test was full of suspense.

England is now leading this Test series. Before the fourth Test, India has a lot to think about and will have to plan to win the last two matches and win the series.
