Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died in a car crash.

  • His brother, Andre, also perished in the collision on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria, while en route to Benavente.
  • Police reported that the incident occurred at 12:30 AM when the Lamborghini in which the two individuals were traveling swerved off the roadway.
  • A vehicle veered off the road, and all evidence suggests a tire blowout occurred during an overtaking maneuver,” stated the Guardia Civil in Zamora to Sky Sports News in an official statement.
  • Consequently, the vehicle ignited, resulting in the deaths of both individuals. While forensic examinations are still underway, one of the victims has been confirmed as Diogo Jota, a player for Liverpool FC, along with his brother, Andre Felipe.”

Police stated that no additional vehicles were implicated in the incident.

Images depicting the aftermath of the collision revealed debris strewn along the roadside, including what seemed to be burnt fragments of the vehicle.

This occurs merely 10 days following the player’s marriage to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.

He was the father of three children.

Diogo Jota served as a forward for Liverpool.

He started his professional journey in his home country of Portugal and played for Atletico Madrid in Spain prior to relocating to England.

In 2020, he transferred to the Merseyside club from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Jota played an important role throughout his five years with the Reds, including scoring six times in Liverpool’s recent Premier League-winning season.

He scored a total of 47 times in 123 matches for the club. He also played 49 times for the Portugal national side, scoring 14 times.

His brother, Andre, 26, played for Penafiel, a Portuguese second division club.

A statement released by Liverpool FC indicated that the club was “devastated” by the death of their player.

“The club has been notified that the 28-year-old has died as a result of a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother, Andre,” the club stated in their announcement

“Liverpool FC will not be providing any additional comments at this moment and requests that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be honored as they attempt to cope with this unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”                                                                                 

The Portuguese football federation expressed that it was “completely heartbroken by the fatalities”.

“More than just an outstanding player, having earned nearly 50 caps for the national team, Diogo Jota was an exceptional individual, held in high regard by both teammates and rivals, a person whose joy

was infectious and a role model within his community.                                                  

We have suffered the loss of two champions. The demise of Diogo and Andre Silva signifies irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will strive to honor their legacy every day.

His previous manager at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, shared his reflections in an Instagram post.

“This is a moment in which I find it difficult to cope! There must be a greater purpose, yet I cannot perceive it,” he expressed.                                                                                                                

“I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre. Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father.

“We will miss you so much. All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them.”

Cristiano Ronaldo, Jota’s captain in the national team, said: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you had gotten married.

To your family, including your wife and children, I extend my heartfelt condolences and wish them immense strength during this difficult time.

“I am aware that you will forever be present in their lives. Rest in Peace, Diogo and Andre. Your absence will be deeply felt by all of us.”
