Ryne Sandberg passed away battling cancer at the age of 65.

Chicago Cubs legendary second baseman and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg passed away from cancer on July 28, 2025, at the age of 65. He had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer since early 2024. Known as “Rhino” by fans and teammates, Sandberg was respected for his work ethic and calm leadership on the field.

Ryne Sandberg’s Early Life

Born on September 18, 1959, in Spokane, Washington, he was interested in sports from a young age. He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies right out of high school in 1978. Although he began his Major League playing career with the Phillies in 1981, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1982—a move that shaped his future and gave the Cubs franchise a different look.

Career with the Chicago Cubs

Ryne Sandberg’s breakout moment came on June 23, 1984, in what is now known as the “Sandberg Game.” In a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Sandberg hit two game-tying home runs off Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter. The game catapulted him to stardom and he was named the National League MVP that same year.

Over 16 MLB seasonsmostly with the Cubs, Sandberg became known as one of the best starting and second basemen in baseball history. His blend of defense, speed, and surprising power set him apart at a position not typically known for hitting home runs.

All-Star Selections: 10 consecutive (1984-1993)

Gold Glove Awards: 9 consecutive (1983-1991)

Silver Slugger Awards: 7

Ryne Sandberg became the first second baseman to hit 30 home runs and 30 home runs in a season (1990)

Hall of Fame Induction: 2005

He retired in 1997 as the all-time second baseman home run leader.

Health Problems and Final Days

Sandberg was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2024. After a brief remission in August, the cancer returned in a big way by December and continued to spread to other organs day by day. Despite this, he stayed positive and even threw a ceremonial pitch at Wrigley Field in June 2024.

He died at home with his family by his side.
